Obsidian Spire Sculptural Vase

Some objects seem to hold a story you can't quite name. The Obsidian Spire is one of them. Part vessel, part sculpture, it recalls a flame frozen in stone, a seed pod about to burst open, an ancient ceremonial totem or the silhouette of a cathedral spire against the sky. It invites interpretation and rewards long, quiet looking.

The form begins at a small, rounded base and swells gently outward before tapering upward into a tall, elongated silhouette. Its outer walls are folded and pinched by hand into broad, leaf-like panels that wrap around the body like protective petals or the husk of a pod. At the top, the form breaks into a cluster of upright spires of varying heights, giving the piece a striking, flame-like crown.

At the centre, a raised vertical spine runs down the front of the vase, punctuated by a column of circular openings that gradually change in size as they descend. These perfectly round voids contrast beautifully with the organic, rippled walls around them, creating a rhythmic focal point and allowing light to pass through the sculpture in small, glowing points. Inside each opening, warm bronze and copper tones peek through, adding depth and a hint of hidden warmth.

The surface is where the piece truly comes alive. The walls are worked into a rich, crinkled and hammered texture, like molten metal or volcanic rock cooling into form. A deep obsidian and charcoal glaze covers the vase with a soft, satin sheen, while subtle bronze highlights rise along the raised edges as light moves across them. The result feels like hand-forged iron or ancient cast bronze, yet carries the warmth and depth of hand-fired ceramic.

The Obsidian Spire is equally compelling as pure sculpture or as a vessel. Display it on its own on a console, sideboard, plinth, window ledge or bookshelf, where its dramatic silhouette can stand against a pale wall. Or style it with a single dried stem or sculptural branch for a minimal, gallery-style arrangement. In natural light, the play of shadow across its folds and the glow through its openings change throughout the day.

Care: wipe with a soft, dry cloth. As each piece is handmade, slight variations in shape, glaze and texture are natural.
